Graham Media Group in market No. 15, Orlando, Fla., wants you to be its next planning editor! The CBS affiliate WKMG News 6 is the busy big-city newsroom youre looking for -- but with better weather and a commitment to hyper-local journalism. That journalism is driven by a dedicated team of professional journalists known as Community Correspondents who live in the same communities they cover day after day. This Planning Editor would support their work and the newsroom in helping News 6 make a significant difference in Central Florida, through the power of compelling, modern storytelling, holding others accountable, and working to improve the communities we serve for the better.
POSITION OVERVIEW
So what is a Planning Editor? If you have newsroom experience, its a better, more future-looking version of the assignment desk. The best Planning Editors are very detail-oriented and extremely organized. You have a good memory, can keep track of a lot of things happening at the same time, and can problem-solve logistics quickly. You also have solid news judgement, which is the ability to look through endless information, emails, news releases, social posts, comments etc, and tell which ones are stories the newsroom should pursue. Finally, youre so plugged in, you help the newsroom both uncover and respond rapidly to breaking news, faster than other competitors in the market.
In order to plan well, our Planning Editors must also be plugged in to the pulse of many of the communities that make up Central Florida. What makes them tick? What issues stand in their way? What are they proud of, and what are they worried about? What kind of difference can News 6 make for these neighbors? A good Planning Editor dives deep into community connections, on social media or developing key contacts with leaders, influencers, and community stakeholders. You will leverage this local knowledge to help newsroom leadership identify, track, and plan compelling content around major news events, local trends, news, and broader issues that impact our audiences across platforms.
