The Scripps National Spelling Bee is one of the most iconic and longest-running academic competitions in the United States, broadcast nationally and watched by millions. We are seeking detail-oriented, adaptable Production Assistants to support both our field operations and office/production teams in the lead-up to and during the event. This is a fast-paced, high-visibility production and an excellent opportunity to work alongside experienced broadcast and live event professionals.
Production Assistants will be assigned to one of two tracks Field or Office based on experience and production needs. Some PAs may be cross-utilized across both areas. All candidates should be comfortable in a high-energy, deadline-driven environment and demonstrate a strong work ethic, positive attitude, and a commitment to excellence.
FIELD PA RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist with setup, strike, and day-of operations on the competition floor and surrounding venue spaces
Support talent coordination, including escorting competitors, families, and on-air talent as directed
Manage walkie-talkie communications and relay information accurately between departments
Assist the AD team with crowd flow, audience management, and maintaining quiet on set during filming
Run errands, distribute materials, and provide general on-site support to department heads
Monitor and maintain prop, signage, and set dressing areas throughout the event
Support camera, lighting, and audio departments with basic equipment needs as directed
Be available for extended hours, including early calls and late strikes
OFFICE PA RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide administrative and logistical support to producers and coordinators during pre-production
Assist with scheduling, travel coordination, and vendor communication
Maintain and organize production documents, contact sheets, and talent files
Support the research and clearance process for on-air content
Help manage contestant and family intake, including paperwork and credential distribution
Assist with the preparation of show materials, rundowns, and briefing packets
Handle phones, emails, and general office tasks as needed
Coordinate with field teams to ensure smooth information flow between office and on-site operations
QUALIFICATIONS
Prior experience on a live event, broadcast, or competition production preferred
Familiarity with standard production workflows and terminology
Strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask under pressure
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Proficiency in Google Workspace and/or Microsoft Office
Must be punctual, professional, and ready to take initiative
Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 30 lbs (Field PAs)
A genuine enthusiasm for live production and large-scale events
