Job Title: Transmission Engineer

Job Description

This hybrid Transmission Engineer role focuses on the design and coordination of medium and high voltage transmission lines between 40kV and 230kV. You will lead projects from initial concept through completion, applying industry standards to overhead and underground systems, voltage conversion initiatives, new capacity builds, and infrastructure replacement projects. You will join a small, specialized transmission team, take on meaningful responsibility quickly, and contribute to the continued growth of a rapidly expanding engineering organization.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and coordination of transmission line projects ranging from 40kV to 230kV, overseeing work from early design through construction support.
  • Apply NESC, ASCE, ACI, and other applicable standards to the engineering and design of overhead and underground transmission systems.
  • Perform detailed design of medium and high voltage transmission lines using PLS-CADD and, as needed, PLS-Pole.
  • Develop and prepare complete construction document packages, including plan and profile drawings, structure loading trees, and foundation assembly drawings.
  • Prepare project specifications and design criteria that clearly define scope, technical requirements, and quality expectations.
  • Provide field support during construction, addressing technical questions, reviewing conditions, and recommending design adjustments as needed.
  • Collaborate closely with utility clients to understand project requirements, communicate design decisions, and ensure alignment with their standards and expectations.
  • Build and maintain strong, long-term relationships with clients through responsive communication, reliable delivery, and technical excellence.
  • Provide technical leadership, guidance, and instruction to less experienced staff members within the transmission group.
  • Contribute to project planning, scheduling, and coordination to meet deadlines and manage workload effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Support continuous improvement of transmission engineering processes, tools, and standards within the department.
  • Work collaboratively with internal multidisciplinary teams, including civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering professionals, to deliver integrated project solutions.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Approximately 5-7 years of transmission line engineering experience, with a focus on line design.
  • Demonstrated experience designing transmission lines in the 40kV to 230kV range.
  • Proficiency with PLS-CADD and/or PLS-Pole for transmission line design.
  • Solid understanding and application of NESC, ASCE, ACI, and other relevant industry standards in transmission line projects.
  • Proven ability to prepare construction documents, including plan and profile drawings, structure loading trees, and foundation assembly drawings.
  • Experience developing project specifications and design criteria for transmission line work.
  • Capability to provide effective field support during construction, including problem-solving and technical decision-making.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work directly with clients and internal stakeholders.
  • Ability to take ownership of assigned projects, manage priorities, and meet deadlines in a hybrid work environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification is highly desirable.
  • Master's degree in an engineering discipline is a plus.
  • Experience with GIS tools to support routing, siting, and data management for transmission projects.
  • Background in construction work related to utility or power delivery projects.
  • Familiarity with PPILE for foundation analysis and design.
  • Experience using FAD for structural or foundation design applications.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD for drafting and design documentation.
  • Experience with Mathcad for engineering calculations and documentation.
  • Familiarity with MicroStation for design and drafting in utility environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers and designers.
  • Comfort working in a growing organization with evolving processes and opportunities to shape departmental practices.

Work Environment

You will work in a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility located in Northville, Michigan, as part of a rapidly growing engineering company of approximately 200 team members. The role follows a hybrid schedule, with three days per week on-site at a major utility's headquarters in Detroit, typically Tuesday through Thursday, and the remaining time spent working remotely. The transmission group is a small, focused team, offering close collaboration, direct impact, and clear opportunities for leadership and growth. The organization emphasizes minimal bureaucracy and quick decision-making, reinvesting consistently in tools, facilities, and people. You will use modern engineering technologies and software, including PLS-CADD, PLS-Pole, GIS, AutoCAD, Mathcad, MicroStation, PPILE, and FAD, in a professional office setting. The company supports relocation for the right candidate and may allow an initial period of up to three months working fully remote before transitioning to the hybrid or in-office schedule. Flexible scheduling is available when you demonstrate the ability to meet deadlines, manage your workload effectively, and take full ownership of your projects.
