Job Summary

The Assistant Director of Programming, Outreach and Partnerships provides leadership and direction for district-wide programming, library outreach, and community partnerships. The position leads the Programming and Outreach Department, establishing standards, practices, and priorities to ensure consistent, high-quality services across the district. The Assistant Director works closely with the Deputy Director to align these functions with district priorities and foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

  • Provide leadership, operational oversight and direct supervision to staff within the Programming & Outreach department.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of district-wide strategies for programming, outreach, community partnerships and bookmobile services ensuring alignment with community needs and library goals.
  • Collaborate with leadership, department staff, and other managers to identify and resolve operational challenges and improve service efficiency.
  • Guide, coach, and evaluate staff performance, providing feedback, making personnel decisions as necessary, and fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee and manage budgets, staffing and resource allocation for areas of responsibility, ensuring financial accountability and efficient use of resources.
  • Manage special projects, new initiatives, and service innovations, ensuring quality, impact, and effective execution.
  • Monitor community needs, develop outreach strategies and cultivate partnerships with organizations to broaden community engagement and expand access to library services.
  • Stay informed on industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies to enhance library services.
  • Participate in interviewing, hiring, and training of staff.
  • Build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with staff across the district and serve as a liaison between staff and FVRL administration.
  • Ensure the delivery of high-quality, equitable, and customer-focused services across assigned branches.
  • Address patron inquiries, feedback, and complaints, ensuring consistent communication and resolution.
  • Represent the library district at external events and community meetings.
  • Track and report on service outcomes, project progress, and operational performance to stakeholders.

Supervision

Under minimal supervision this position reports to the Deputy Director, requires considerable judgment to make decisions and develop ideas. This position supervises assigned staff within the Programming & Outreach department. This role may also oversee professional, paraprofessional and other assigned staff. Provides leadership and direction, and is responsible for performance management of assigned staff.

Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Minimum of five years of related work experience required.
  • Minimum of three years of supervisory experience required.
  • Experience leading complex organizational structures and guiding multi-tiered teams.
  • Experience in coaching and developing supervisors to maximize team performance and organizational outcomes.
  • Experience managing operations within a multi-location library system or similar organization.
  • Library leadership and management experience required.
  • A valid driver’s license in good standing is required.

Schedule & Location

This position works Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm at the district's Operations Center in Vancouver, WA. While the role is exempt from overtime, the exact hours may vary based on the demands of the position and business needs. Occasional evening or weekend hours may be required to meet deadlines or support project requirements.

Compensation & Benefits

This position earns between $94,913.82 and $142,370.73 annually. To be considered for a starting salary above the pay grade minimum, candidates must exceed the minimum experience requirements listed above.

We have an excellent benefit package. FVRLibraries covers 90-95% of full-time employees’ health insurance premium cost and 90-100% of dental insurance premium costs. In addition we provide employees with Life Insurance, AD&D and Long-Term Disability Insurance at no cost to the employee. Employees have the ability to enroll in additional, voluntary life insurance, income protection plans, flexible spending accounts and health savings accounts.

Our employees enjoy 13 paid holidays throughout the year. Full time employees accrue 8 hours of sick leave per month. The initial vacation leave accrual is 11 hours per month; this increases over time based on years of employment. We also offer other types of paid time off for situations such as jury duty, bereavement leave, inclement weather and more.
